The nature of work started to change drastically during gilded age, nation started leaving the farms and began engross labor in factories. This shift in the location of work continued to escalate throughout the era, and even up somewhat to this day. Moving from the subsistence farm to the factory changed everything though. Moving into wage labor meant that there was more reliance on others than the antecedently almost self-reliant farmers. The factories also spawned the creation of labor unions which began exerting influence over the government, the unions started small in this era, but eventually gained power.
